Maison KEI: A Michelin-Starred Chef’s French Delight in Gotemba @ Mt. Fuji
In January 2021, a new French restaurant “Maison KEI (メゾンケイ)” opened in Gotemba, Shizuoka, after years of anticipation. The mastermind behind this culinary marvel is none other than the renowned chef, Kei Kobayashi, owner of “Restaurant Kei” in Paris, who became the first Japanese chef to achieve a Michelin 3-star rating in France. This collaboration with Toraya, a traditional Japanese confectionery maker, marks Kei’s first restaurant venture in Japan, nestled at the base of the iconic Mt. Fuji. Toraya adds its touch with a factory, shop, and tea room within the city.
Located just 10 minutes away from the Gotemba exit of E1 Tomei Expressway, Maison KEI offers a convenient journey from Tokyo, with an approximate 1.5-hour trip, if not hindered by traffic. Moreover, the restaurant sits merely a mile away from the famous Gotemba Premium Outlets one of Japan’s largest outlet malls.
Maison KEI welcomes guests into a chic and modern interior adorned with wood elements and large windows, providing almost every seat with a breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji. The restaurant can accommodate 14 guests in addition to one private room for 6-8 people and two semi-private rooms for 4-6 people, ensuring an intimate dining experience.
Dishes
During our visit in early February for lunch, we were delighted with two menu options: “DECOUVERTE” with four dishes (our choice this time) or “VOYAGE” with six.
The course begun with an amuse-bouche, choux gougères made with French Comté cheese, followed by the chef’s specialty, “Jardin de Regume Croquant,” a unique and visually appealing dish with a mixture of 40 different vegetables and smoked salmon.
As I requested a pescatarian menu, my partner and I were served different dishes from the second course onwards. The potato and prosciutto gnocchi exhibited a creamy cheesiness, while the Omar shrimp risotto impressed with its rich flavors and fantastic color.
For the main course, I savored a grilled red snapper fillet with basil sauce, where the crispy scales added a fun twist, complemented by hints of lemon and squid ink. My partner opted for the gibier main course and chose Hokkaido Ezo deer for an extra charge, although other options like locally grown chicken or wagyu beef with additional charges are also available.
The dessert was a delightful surprise, featuring a combination of white miso (!) and raspberry ice creams crowned with adorable pink meringue, served alongside Toraya’s signature anko (red bean jam), poured at the table. For special occasions like anniversaries, simply mention it during reservation, and they’ll be happy to arrange a personalized plate with a message and a candle for you. The after-meal café is not included in the price but comes served with raw caramel.
The quality, atmosphere, view, and hospitality offered by Maison KEI are nothing short of miraculous, especially considering its affordable prices. The restaurant proves to be perfect for dates, business dinners, and celebrations alike. Maison KEI is undeniably worth the trip!
Reservations are currently by phone call only, which should be made between 10:00-11:30 and 15:00-17:30. You should brace for having to make multiple calls, though, as the line could be often busy due to the popularity.
